The standing surface of this SUP has an anti-slip deck pad for added traction. The swallowtail design improves stability and buoyancy for a smooth ride on calm waters like lakes and gentle creeks.

Last on the list but certainly not list, the Imagine surf V2 board is the perfect board for fishermen and fisherwomen. Choose between a seat or a standing position depending on your mood and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Stability
Made from blow-molded polyethylene, this SUP is one of the few on our list that is not inflatable. The rigidity of the material provides better stability and durability than its inflatable competitors. It includes a full-length EVA deck pad for improved traction and safety. It is a little heavier than some of the other paddle boards, but that weight adds to the stability in the water.
Features
The V2 Wizard includes a flip-up seat that can be tucked away when not in use. It has several molded features for comfort and convenience, including two storage compartments, a bungee system, rod holders, and a paddle clip. While most of the paddleboards on our list are versatile, this one is particularly well-suited for fishing.
Pros
- Seating or standing option available on every board (flip the seat up or down depending on your mood).
- Rigid material.
- Full-length EVA deck pad for maximum traction and safety whether you are sitting or standing.
- All of the features you would want and expect on a fishing SUP board.
- An incredibly versatile fishing vessel.
Cons
- Not an inflatable board (meaning it might be better for intermediate and advanced boarders).
- As it is not inflatable, it will also not be the easiest board to travel with.
The Best Fishing Paddle Boards Review Criteria
Any fishing SUP board is going to cost a decent amount, so you will want to be sure that whatever one you buy is the right one for you. Knowing what criteria we used to decide what makes a good fishing paddle board will no doubt help you in your own purchasing decision. So, whether you are considering one of the boards listed above, or any other option, keep the below criteria in mind.
Stability
In our opinion, one of the most important things to look for in a paddle board is how stable and balanced it is. This is especially true when using it for fishing considering you will be potentially spending hours at a time on it.
What material it is made out of, how tall and wide it is, and how thick it is (amongst other things) will dictate how stable you are on it. Whilst experience, balance and coordination comes in to it to some extent, you want to control what you can well in advance of your fishing trip!
Features
Next you will want to assess what features and functionality the board has and compare it to your personal requirements. For example, if you don’t have a roof rack and/or want to travel with your board, you will want to go with an inflatable option. If this is the case, you will want your board to have a detachable fin also.
Accessories
How many and what accessories a board comes with will also influence your decision. In fact, some boards come pre-packaged with all the accessories you would ever need for a successful fishing trip. If budget is a bigger concern, go with a board with less accessories. You can always order more accessories later on should you want them.
Price
Of course budget and price will be a concern with any larger piece of sports or fishing equipment you order. Costs vary greatly depending on the brand making your board and its features. You should budget a minimum of $500 to get a good quality board and they get gradually more expensive from their depending on what features and accessories they offer. Spending a fortune won’t always get you the best board but spending next to nothing will always get you a low-quality one.
If budget is still a concern/issue, I suggest checking out some used boards. Just make sure that you properly vet the seller before going through with the purchase.
SUP Fishing Tips
Here are some quick tips to help you get the most out of your SUP fishing trips.
Always Get a Fishing License
Unlicensed fishing fines can be expensive and spoil what should be a relaxing and peaceful experience. Always research the rules and regulations in the area you intend to visit. Purchase a fishing license well in advance and carry all the relevant documentation with you on the day.
Analyse the Weather & Environment
Before getting in the water, take a few minutes to observe and analyse the weather and environment. Get a gauge on the wind, current and tide. Doing so can help prepare yourself for any drift and allow you to strategize where you will do your fishing. It could even be worth saying hello to the locals and asking if they know of any particularly good spots.
Prepare & Don’t Overpack
Unnecessary weight can get you off balance and clutter the deck. Given your limited space, you should only pack what you need for the trip. Too much stuff will slow you down on the water too.
Tie Your Equipment to The Board
No matter how careful you are, there is always the chance that you capsize and end up in the water. So, tie all of your gear and valuables down to prevent you loosing them in the event of an accident. You can always unfasten them once you are stationary.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can you fish from a paddle board?
You absolutely can! Fishing from a paddle board can be incredibly relaxing, enjoyable and productive. Make sure that you look for a paddle board designed for fishing though as these are made to keep your gear, bait and rods safely attached whilst you are out on the water.
Will I catch more fish on a paddle board?
Whilst a paddle board can allow you to get to the quieter areas where fish haven’t been previously disturbed (and might be easier to catch), how many fish you catch on a paddle board will still depend on where you are, if others are fishing in the area, the time of year/day, the weather and how good you are at fishing. You will need just as much patience whilst paddle board fishing as you need whilst fishing normally.
Do I still need a fishing license?
Yes, most likely. You need a fishing license almost everywhere and you are always better researching well in advance of your trip. You do not want to end up with a hefty fine if you are caught fishing without a license.
What accessories do I need with a fishing SUP board?
Well, technically speaking if you have your rods, bait and a paddle, you are good to go. You will however find that your trips are much more enjoyable and productive if you bring along a few important accessories. I have listed some common ones below.
Rod Holders
Some boards come with these pre-attached. If not, you will want to invest in some fishing rod holders to keep your lines uncrossed and your deck better organised. Trust me, ordering these will save you a lot of time and stress.
Fishing Cooler
You will find some boards that come with a fishing cooler (some are even built directly in to the board!). Providing all goes well on your trip, you might be out on the water for some time. Having a cooler full off food, drinks and snacks will allow you to be more comfortable, focused and patient throughout your trip.
Board Stabilizers
Even the best paddle boarders will benefit from stabilizers. You will never be more glad you bought them than on a chillier day where the last thing you want is to spend some time in the water. With you on the board plus any rods, gear and accessories, you are bound to get off-balance from time to time. A stablizer is an easy fix for this.
Waterproof Carry Case or Bag
no matter how careful and still you are out on the water, accidents happy and you and/or your gear can easily end up floating in it. This is where a waterproof carry case or bag pays for itself. Keep you valuables such as cash, your phone, keys and any medication in their so you don’t have to worry about them getting lost or damaged.
Seat
I know what you’re thinking, it is called ‘stand up paddle boarding’ so why are we talking about a seat? Well, if you’re fishing on your board you might be out on the water all day. Standing up for even a couple hours is exhausting. So, many of the best fishing SUP boards come with detachable (or even built in) seats.
GPS
Do you know the way around all the lakes and rivers in your area? Me either. A GPS can make or break your SUP fishing trip (especially when you’re trying out a new area). The last thing you want is to be lost and stressed after a day of reeling them in!
SUP Flash/Fishing Light
Sometimes the best catches are made early on in the morning or late in the evening/at night. Also, at these quieter times, it can even more relaxing and peaceful out on the water (which can lead to a better catch). Normal flashlights are easily lost, often not the brightest and can have a relatively short battery life. For this reason, it is worth investing in a good SUP fishing light. I suggest that you find and invest in a fishing light that integrates nicely with your paddle board. Not only will it give you better vision but it will also help other vessels, people and boats see you in darker environments.
Anchor
Once you reach your favourite fishing sports, you will find that you can quickly start to drift. Having an anchor to hand will extend your trips and can result in more productive sessions. Considering how light the board and you are compared to a boat or kayak, a small anchor will do the trick.
Lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD)
This one is self explanatory. Even the strongest of swimmers are at risk in open water. Get yourself a suitable PFD and wear it anytime you go out on your board.
Board Leash
The board leash keeps the whole board attached to you in the event that you fall in the water. Fasten it to your ankle before going out to keep you, others and your gear safe.
SUP Paddle
I am not sure if this one should really be counted as an accessory as without one, you aren’t going anywhere. Still, a lightweight and efficient paddle can make or break your SUP fishing trip.
