No matter which in-ground system you choose, you will want it to be sturdy, secure, strong, durable and ideally adjustable (allowing you to adjust the types of shots you are throwing and practising). However, even taking this strict list of review criteria into account, there are still so many options out there. It can be difficult to decide which one is the best one for you.

We have put together this ultimate guide to be the only one that you ever need. We take all the aforementioned criteria into account alongside the online review profiles of each product on our list and narrow down the best options for you no matter your budget or level of skill.

Please note: You should be cautious buying the cheapest hoop on the market. The highest price by no means guarantees quality but you can be sure that the cheapest price guarantees low-quality.

The 10 Best In-Ground Basketball Hoops

1. Lifetime 71525 In-Ground System

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size54 inches
Backboard MaterialPolycarbonate
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang22 inches
Support Pole3.5″-round

Features

Height

The Lifetime 71525 is an adjustable hoop which allows you to place it at 7.5 feet to 10 feet high and anywhere in between. The power lift feature means even smaller and/or younger players can effortlessly adjust the height (with the manufacturer claiming that people can even do so using just one hand).

Support Pole

The support pole is 3.5 inches thick which is good as we will discuss below how the backboard is bigger and heavier than the 90020 models.

Backboard

Reviewers have commented that the backboard is great for bank shots and lay ups which is a strong positive for the strength, quality and stability of it. The Makrolon polycarbonate backboard is also shatter proof for added durability. At 54 inches, the backboard is considerably larger than the 90020 models (hence the thicker support pole).

Hoop/Rim

The breakaway Slam-It Pro rim is sturdy, secure and enjoyable to use. The double compression spring design does allow for dunking (kids and teenagers, not adults) but as with most in-ground hoops, you should approach such moves with caution. The rim holds the weather resistant nylon net securely in place throughout practise sessions.

Installation

As with most in-ground systems, the hoop must be fit in the ground using cement. There is a 71524 option which is portable but details on that are for another article. This option does not come with a ground sleeve meaning once set in place, the pole cannot be removed. You can however purchase this separately which would allow the pole to be removed post installation. Overall, plan to spend at least half a day to a full day installing it.

Positives

  • Great option for bank shots and lay ups.
  • Shatterproof backboard.
  • Easy to use height adjustment.
  • Suitable for kids/younger players.

Negatives

  • Not the most suitable for adults to dunk on.

Expert Rating: 5/5

2. Silverback SB60 In-Ground Basketball Hoop

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size60 inches
Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang30 inches
Support Pole4″ x 4″

Features

Height

The crank actuator allows you to set your Silverback SB60 in-ground hoop anywhere between 7.5ft and 10ft high in 6 inch increments (at 10ft your system would meet NBA and NCAA regulations). The adjustment system is easy to use and child friendly so this is an appropriate option for families.

Support Pole

One of the key benefits of this system is that it comes with an anchor kit/pole sleeve. The 4″ by 4″ support pole is not the easiest to get in the sleeve but the added benefit is that if you were to move to a new house, you could take the whole hoop with you. The 60-inch backboard option also comes with a protective pole pad which is a nice bonus.

Backboard

This system features a generous 60-inch backboard made from reinforced tempered glass. You can also order the system with a smaller board at 54-inches. When installed properly you will have a 2.5ft or 30-inch overhang for under-the-net play.

Hoop/Rim

The pro-style breakaway rim is a medium weight and sturdy. It is not recommended for dunking but some reviewers have noted that they get away with it. Really you should consult the 5-year limited warranty to make sure dunking on it does not void the protection.

Installation

Although the system comes with everything you will need to install it (including anchor kit, rebar, J bolts and anchor plate), you may want to go with the expert assembly. If you prefer to do things yourself just be sure to buy the concrete for pouring before it arrives as this is not included. The instructions seem quite straight forward and when followed properly should leave you with a sturdy, secure basketball hoop.

Positives

  • Pole pad and backboard pads included.
  • 5-year limited warranty.
  • Anchor kit means you can take it with you if you ever more house or flat.

Negatives

  • Really not a great option for dunking or hanging as it is not a single pole system.

Expert Rating: 5/5

3. Lifetime 71281 Below Ground Basketball System

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size52 inches
Backboard MaterialPolycarbonate
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang15 inches
Support Pole3.5″-round

Features

Height

The Lifetime 71281 model has a backboard at 10 feet high when adjusted to the highest setting and 7.5 feet when at the lowest. The power lift adjustment handle and mechanism makes adjusting the height effortless so little kids can happily use this hoop.

Support Pole

The round support pole is 3.5″ in diameter and made up of 3 pieces. As it is a multi-part pole, you should not attempt to dunk or hang on it. Doing so will likely weaken the structure and could result in damage or injury. The friction-weld joints keep the pole still and helps prevent unintentional movement. You should order an in-ground sleeve separately to ensure the hoop can be moved at a later date.

Backboard

The Lifetime 71281 in-ground hoop comes with a 52″ backboard made from polycarbonate. It is strong and long lasting. The steel frame helps further and makes this particular backboard shatterproof. The strategic materials like powder coated steel keeps the equipment weather proof, protected from rust and protected from potentially damaging UV light.

Hoop/Rim

A Slam-it rim is attached securely to the backboard and is sturdy when fitted correctly. The weatherproof net is pre-attached to the hoop also. Despite the rim being a breakaway one, you should not attempt to dunk on it as this could void your 5-year warranty should you damage the it at any point.

Installation

When installed correctly, the hoop will be very sturdy and resistant. Whilst a lot sturdier than a portable option, bear in mind that this is not a single pole system so it will never be as reliable as the hoops you find at gyms or indoor courts. Some reviewers decided to secure the system further by pouring concrete although this makes it considerably less moveable later.

Positives

  • More affordable than other options. Great for basketball players on a budget.
  • Steel trimmed design will look nice in your driveway or backyard.
  • Weatherproof and UV protected.

Negatives

  • 3-piece system means this is not the strongest option on the market.
  • Smaller backboard can limit the effectiveness of your practise.

4. Goalrilla GS54 Permanent Basketball Goal

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size54 inches
Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang30 inches
Support Pole5″ x 5″

Features

Height

Goalrilla is known for their high-quality in-ground basketball hoops and the 7.5 – 10 feet adjustable height GS54 system is no different. It is a wonderful addition to a confined playing area or driveway.

Support Pole

The single piece of 5″ x 5″ solid steel used to support the backboard and rim offers the most strength and stability you can expect to find from an at-home system. Unlike portable or two/three piece options, the single support pole is grounded with concrete which minimises wobble.

Backboard

This permanent basketball hoop features a 54-inch backboard although if you prefer a larger one you can order the same system with a 60-inch or 72-inch one. The 54″ option is 3/8″ thick and quite heavy as it is made from tempered glass.

Hoop/Rim

The pro-style breakaway rim is great at minimising wobble and unwanted movement. This style of hoops is a good partner for the single piece support pole. The rim flexes under pressure which means it should be very durable.

Installation

You can install the powder coated, rust resistant solid steel single piece pole in to a 48″ concrete base to secure it in place. It comes with rebar steel rods for added stability and an anchor kit which means there is limited digging involved should you move residence.

Positives

  • Anchor kit makes the hoop transferable/moveable.
  • Comes with all you need to install including rebar steel rods and anchor bolt mounting system.
  • Goalrilla is known for their high-quality basketball systems.

Negatives

  • Smaller backboard but if you want a larger one you can order the same system with a 60-inch or 72-inch board.

5. Spalding NBA In-Ground Basketball System

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size60 inches
Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang24 inches
Support Pole4″ x 4″

Features

Height

The U-lift detachable handle system offers easy height adjustment and can be used to place the backboard between 7. 5 and 10 feet high. You will find that most in-ground hoops range from between 7.5 and 10ft. This is a standard height for any at home hoop.

Support Pole

Spalding is a great brand and they offer quality products. This set up uses a solid 4″ x 4″ pole which is secured to the ground to minimise rattling and shaking.

Backboard

The Spalding NBA system comes with a tempered glass 60″ backboard which is closer to the professional sized ones. This bigger size offers a greater level of play and has a nice rebound. There is however only a 2ft off set/overhang which is considerably less than the 4ft offered by regulation hoops. This does allow for some under the hoop play however and the large majority of front/backyard hoops feature a similar size overhang.

Hoop/Rim

The Pro Image steel breakaway rim is partnered with an all-weather proof net which will stand up against even the toughest of winds and storms.

Installation

The system comes with a ground sleeve meaning you can detach the hoop and move it if needed. Some reviewers did opt to skip the ground sleeve it seems which can help further increase stability and prevent wobble/shaking.

Positives

  • Official NBA logo on the steel-framed backboard.
  • 60-inch backboard offers a great playing experience.
  • Detachable handle for height adjustment.
  • Weather-proof net included.
  • Ground sleeve include.

Negatives

  • Smaller off-set/overhang than you would find on regulation size hoops.

6. Pro Dunk Hercules Driveway/Backyard Basketball Hoop

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size72 inches
Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height10 feet (Fixed)
Overhang48 inches
Support Pole6″ x 6″

Features

Height

At a fixed 10 feet, the Pro Dunk Hercules in-ground basketball hoop is one of the best options for serious players and one of the worst options for younger players. The system has no height adjustment which does make it considerably stronger and sturdier.

Support Pole

The 6-inch x 6-inch “rock solid” single piece support pole is one of the strongest you will find holding up a backyard hoop. It is so strong and reliable that the Pro Dunk limited lifetime warranty on this product covers dunking and hanging from the hoop. The system also comes with a 1 inch thick pole pad.

Backboard

The Pro Dunk Hercules gets even closer to regulation standard hoops when we consider the backboard and overhang. At 72 inches, the half inch thick tempered glass backboard is the same dimensions/measurements as NBA systems. The 4ft overhang offers ample playing area under the net also.

Hoop/Rim

There are fewer details about the hoop and rim but the dunking and hanging covered in the limited lifetime warranty suggests that you won’t run into any problems here either.

Installation

Considering how professional and high-spec this rig is, we would suggest going for the expert installation option. However, if attempting to install yourself, make sure you use plenty of concrete to secure it in place.

Positives

  • One of the closest to a regulation NBA hoop you can hope to find for your home court.
  • Extremely strong and durable (when maintained properly, this system could last for years or even decades).
  • Limited lifetime warranty which covers dunking and hanging (rarely found in even in-ground systems for the garden).

Negatives

  • None we could think of/find.

Expert Rating: 5/5

7. Pro Dunk Platinum Basketball Hoop, System & Net

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Technical Details

Backboard Size72 inches
Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height5.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang48 inches
Support Pole8″ x 6″

Features

Height

Many aspects of the Pro Dunk Platinum are similar to the Hercules model. However, one key difference is the height of the 2 systems. Whilst the Hercules is fixed at 10ft, the Platinum hoop can be adjusted from 5.5ft tall to 10ft tall. A dual canister, quad spring assistance system means even kids can adjust the height of this hoop.

Support Pole

Amazingly, the 5-gauge steel support pole on this system is a couple of inches thicker than the Hercules! This is likely so that you can safely dunk and hang on it at different heights. The one-piece support pole will stand up to even the harshest of elements.

Backboard

Another hoop with an NBA sized backboard at 72 inches. This is the same size you would find on a university/college or competition arena hoop. The ½ inch thick tempered glass provides a wonderful material for rebound shots.

Hoop/Rim

Again, the focus of this system is on the support pole and backboard. However, the net and rim will be strong and durable so even older players can dunk and hang safely.

Installation

Reviewers have commented that they had no problem installing the hoop or pouring the concrete to secure it. It comes with J-bolts and installation instructions too. Given the weight of the backboard, make sure you have some friends on hand to help you lift it.

Positives

  • Great for the most advanced players.
  • Can even be used by kids thanks to the assisted height adjustment.
  • NBA/college size hoop.
  • Long lasting hoop.

Negatives

  • None to report.

Expert Rating: 4/5

8. Pro Dunk Diamond At-Home Basketball Goal

*Details last updated on 2023-09-22

Technical Details

Backboard Size72 inches
Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height6 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang60 inches
Support Pole12″ x 8″

Features

Height

With many backyard hoops offering height adjustment between 7.5ft and 10ft, this Pro Dunk option could be more appealing for those with younger kids as it allows you to adjust the height down to 6ft. The height adjustment is done by using a spring-assisted system which can be operated by players as young as 6 years old.

Support Pole

The Pro Dunk Diamond system boasts one of the largest support poles available. The massive 12″ x 8″ 5-gauge steel pole will stand strong for years to come on your backyard court.

Backboard

Another hoop offering a regulation size backboard. The 72″ backboard is made from half inch-thick tempered glass and allows you to enjoy gym-quality play. You also have an exceptional 60 inches off set (best for larger backyard courts) allowing for layups and boxing out play.

Hoop/Rim

Another reason why this is one of the best in-ground basketball hoops on the market is the competition level break-away rim. As per the other models, the rim ups the performance of the single piece support pole and offers added stability.

Installation

The goal system comes with rebar, bolts and the bottom/baseplate. By using the anchoring system as the instructions describes, you should be able to get your hoop installed safely and securely.

Positives

  • Unconditional backboard replacement (shipped free).
  • Regulation sized backboard.
  • 60-inch overhang.
  • Great option for dunking and hanging.

Negatives

  • Really this goal system is only suitable for larger playing areas and outdoor courts.

*Details last updated on 2023-09-21

Backboard MaterialTempered Glass
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang48 inches

Backboard

You can order the system with a 54″, 60″ or 72″ backboard making it suitable for players with a range of budgets. The 72″ option is the NBA regulation sized but a 54″ backboard will be more than enough for the casual ball player or kids/teenagers. The 4ft overhang is perfect for under the net play and more advanced practise sessions.

Hoop/Rim

The Spalding Flex goal breaks to the front and is great for dunking or even hanging. By partnering the breakaway rim with an all-weather net, the system is made to remain strong throughout all seasons.

Installation

10. Silverback NXT In-Ground Basketball Hoop

*Details last updated on 2023-09-22

Technical Details

Backboard Size54″
Backboard MaterialAcrylic
Height7.5 – 10 feet (Adjustable)
Overhang24 inches
Support Pole5″-round

Features

Height

An all-steel actuator can be used to adjust the height between the staple 7.5 and 10 feet. A good range of heights for players of all ages and skill level.

Support Pole

The support pole is actually made up of 3 pieces. This does mean that dunking and hanging is not an option. Doing so could cause damage and almost certainly void the 5-year limited warranty. The pole is powder coated steel and we found no comments of rust being an issue.

Backboard

The infinity edge backboard is 54″ and folds backwards for added stability. Not the largest backboard on the market but a good size and style for your first home court hoop.

Hoop/Rim

The system comes with a breakaway hoop/rim and flexes under pressure. The system and rim has been inspired by looking at regulation hoops and delivers on performance and durability.

Installation

The goal system really stands out when it comes to installation. A quick assembly design means it is possible to install it within 90 minutes. You can get your Silverback NXT in-ground hoop installed considerably quicker than other options. A good choice for those not so confident installing and building goal systems.

Positives

  • Incredible 90 minute or less set up/installation.
  • 24 inch overhang (rare for backboards of this size).
  • 5 year limited warranty.

Negatives

  • Accessories are not included.

Before You Buy

Legal Restrictions

Before installing your basketball hoop, make sure that you are legally allowed to do so. There are rules put in place by home owner associations (HOA) and local governments/councils which could prevent you from installing a hoop if it caused any “unsightly nuisance” for your neighbours. Failure to check this could result in you spending a lot of time and money installing your hoop only to take it down a short time later if someone complains.

Utility Lines

You will need to dig in to the ground in order to install your permanent basketball hoop. Before doing so you will need to check that there are no underground utility lines which could make installing the hoop dangerous (and expensive if you cause any damage). Use the free service Call 811 to check you can safely dig before you start. Or, find out more details for your specific state here.

Court Size & Dimensions

Measure the playing area before you attempt to install your hoop. You will likely be looking at an NBA regulation half-court for a standard backyard or driveway which is 50ft x 47ft or 50ft x 42ft for high school courts. You can make your court bigger or smaller depending on how much space you have available.

Assuming that you want a 2ft off-set and 2ft behind the hoop to easily use any height adjustment, you should make your court 27ft long. If you have less space, consider buying a hoop with a smaller overhang and/or backboard.

How to Install Your Hoop

We have offered a quick overview of installing your in-ground basketball hoop below, for more detailed instructions see our guide to installing your in-ground basketball system.

Installing the Support Pole

The support pole is the foundation of any in-ground hoop. It ensures the system remains stable, sturdy and a good support pole will minimise shaking and unwanted hoop movement. The support pole can sometimes consist of multiple parts (usually on more affordable/cheaper options).

The support pole (or bottom part of it if the pole consists of multiple sections) will be placed into a deep hole in the ground and then concrete will be poured to secure it in place. You need to make sure that this part is level as this cannot be moved once the concrete has set.

Some hoops come with an anchor kit (or you can order one separately if your system doesn’t come with one and your hoop supports this) which will allow you to level it later on by adjusting the J-Bolts under the baseplate.

Goalrilla has uploaded a useful video of an anchor plate being installed which you can watch below.

Installing the Backboard & Hoop

The hoop/rim, net and backboard should all come with predrilled holes so attaching them together and then to the support pole should be straightforward.

Review Criteria

In order to select the best in-ground basketball hoops available, we followed a strict list of review criteria to write this buyers guide. By looking at these areas for each product reviewed, we could judge each one fairly and more effectively. The exact criteria used is listed below.

Height

We made sure we looked at the height of system and more importantly, whether the height is fixed or adjustable. Fixed height hoops are great for added stability and usually better options if you are looking to regularly dunk or hang off the rim. Adjustable height hoops however are better for families and players of different skill levels.

Backboard

The backboard is one of the most important parts of the goal system due to the effect it can have on rebound shots and general play. We took into consideration the material used and size of the boards whilst reviewing each listing.

Hoop/Rim

The hoop/rim used (the net was included under this section) can also have a profound effect on your play. A shaky or insecure rim can lead to missed shots and player frustration so it was important to look at this in more detail for each option.

Installation

Installing an in-ground basketball hoop does not need to be difficult when you buy from the right brand. Most hoops from leading manufacturers come with simple, easy to follow installation instructions. However, the way you install each hoop can differ taking into account things like sleeves, anchoring kits and what is included with delivery of your hoop.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much does it cost to install an in-ground basketball hoop?

This really does depend on how you install it and if you hire someone to do it, how much they charge. On average, it will cost about $500 to have an in-ground hoop installed in your driveway or backyard. If you are installing it yourself, there will be no labour costs. Just be sure to account for any additional material costs like concrete or rebar (if not included with your hoop).

How long does it take to install and in-ground basketball hoop?

For most in-ground hoops, give yourself at least 1 day for installation (although most hoops can be installed in 1 – 4 hours). Some options like the Silverback NXT can be installed in less than 90 minutes though.

Remember that with an in-ground system, you will need to wait for the concrete to dry also. Depending on the temperature of where you live, this could take anywhere between 2 and 7 days to dry fully.

Can in-ground hoops be moved?

This depends on how you install the hoop. If you use a sleeve and anchor kit, you can actually move the in-ground hoop at a later date. This is brilliant if you know you might be moving residence in the next few months or years and will want to take your system with you.

What is a “ground sleeve”?

A ground sleeve, mentioned above, is a goal system accessory which allows an in-ground hoop to be moved at a later date. You can secure the sleeve in the ground using concrete and then place the support pole inside the sleeve. Usually a locking mechanism will then secure the pole in place.

Is a 72-inch backboard too big for a driveway?

This depends entirely on how big your driveway is. You will be much better off selecting a backboard size based on the size of your court. If you have a home court or lots of space, you can go with a 60″ or 72″ option. If you have a smaller driveway however, you might be better off with a 54″ or even 44″ board.

Is a 54″ backboard big enough?

This will depend on who is playing. For a younger or more casual player, 54″ is more than enough. More advanced players looking to practise for competitive and college play however might benefit more from a 60″ or regulation size 74″ backboard.

Is polycarbonate or acrylic better for backboard?

In general, polycarbonate is stronger and more durable than acrylic. The price between the two is not too different either. Personally, I would go with a polycarbonate option.

How deep should a basketball pole be in the ground?

Please refer to the installation instructions of the hoop you have ordered as this can be different depending on the size, design and brand of your system. A good general rule though is that a quarter of the poles total length should be in the ground.

How many bags of concrete do I need for an in-ground basketball hoop?

This is another question which answer will depend on the size and design of your hoop. You should consult the installation instructions before making any firm decision. Usually it will take 12 or 13 bags of concrete to secure and keep an in-ground hoop in place though.

Can I convert a portable hoop into an in-ground one?

Technically yes but I wouldn’t recommend it. You could do so by cutting the bottom of the portable hoop off and securing it in the ground with concrete. However, this is unlikely to be as secure or accurate as purchasing an affordable in-ground system to begin with.

Where else can I buy in-ground basketball hoops from?

You’ll find links to many different in-ground goals above, but there are several places you can purchase one of your own.

If you want to compare prices, features, warranties and anything else across several different stores, we suggest also checking out:

USA

United Kingdom

Or, for an even better fit, ask your local basketball club what hoops they recommend for at-home play!

What is the best hoop for beginners?

As a beginner, you want to marry price with quality. As much as you like playing ball now, you never know where you’ll be at in a few years time. So don’t over invest just yet, you can always upgrade your system in the future if you feel the need to.

For beginners, we suggest going with the Spalding NBA In-Ground Basketball System. Not only is it affordable but it is of the highest quality. Spalding systems are known for their robustness, and as a beginner you won’t find a better hoop for your first backyard goal.

What is the best in-ground system for advanced players?

As an advanced player you more likely already have some preference as to what hoop you would like for your home, maybe based off the ones you’ve played on down the court or gym.

For advanced players, we recommend throwing the budget out the window if possible and seeking out the highest-end goal that will last for decades. Something like the Goalrilla GS54 Permanent Basketball Goal which, whilst slightly more expensive, consists of a single support pole making dunking and slamming more appropriate.

Essentially you want something that will be able to stand up to the more aggressive style of play that an advanced player is likely to use at times. Also, something which you won’t need to replace within a couple of years.

Which is the cheapest in-ground basketball hoop?

In general you will find that no proper in-ground goal is cheap. Some might be more affordable, like the Silverback NXT, but even an average hoop will set you back a few hundred dollars.

If it is cheap and the most affordable that you’re after, you will likely be much better off and more satisfied with a portable hoop (at least until you’ve had some time to save up for a higher-quality in-ground system).

Jake Dennon

I am an avid sports enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to train with some of the best athletes and coaches in the world.

As a child, I had a keen interest in martial arts (karate). I've trained with one of the best trainers in my home country.

Moving into my teenage years I tried everything from calisthenics to weight lifting to Taekwondo and everything in between. While I do love all kinds of sports, my passion still lies in martial arts.

The combat sport coaches I have been trained by have also trained some of the top fighters in the industry. All of these brilliant trainers (and all the ones in between) have shown me just how rewarding keeping fit and healthy can be.

  • I am confident this will be the best investment I’ve made yet. Portable hoops are great but they just don’t do the job when it comes to more aggressive play.

Wanted to check, how long will it take to install an in-ground hoop once it has arrived?

    Thanks

    Joe

    • Cool Joe, I’m confident in that also. We have had 6 or 7 close friends install theirs now and none have looked back.

This will depend on how handy you are (or if you pay someone else to do it). You should be able to get most things in place within the day if you start early, pouring concrete is where time is of the most importance. Make sure you leave enough time for it to set. The last thing you want is your hoop tumbling over.

      Best
